New Paltz Launches “Expect A Pedestrian” Initiative – Streets for Everyone: Drivers, Cyclists, Walkers

New Paltz, NY (August 8, 2024):  Building on the success of the longstanding “Expect A Bike” program, artist Ryan Cronin, Annex Agency and, the New Paltz Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee are proud to announce the launch of a new pedestrian safety initiative called “Expect A Pedestrian.” This campaign aims to raise awareness among drivers and create a safer walking environment for everyone in the community.

“We all need to get from one place to another, and everyone is a Pedestrian at some point during each day,” said Mike Henry, Board Member of the New Paltz Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee. “The ‘Expect A Pedestrian’ initiative reminds drivers and pedestrians to be aware of each other and share the road. “

Similar to “Expect A Bike,” the new program will utilize educational materials, signage, and community outreach to promote safe streets.. Key messages will focus on:

  • Yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks and at intersections.
  • Obeying posted speed limits, particularly in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic.
  • Avoiding distractions while driving, such as using cell phones.

“In a college town with a significant tourist presence, the “Expect a Pedestrian” initiative is particularly crucial,” says Melanie Cronin, Director of The Cronin Gallery. “ The distraction epidemic affects all groups: college students often navigate campus while using smartphones, tourists unfamiliar with local roads consult maps or phones for directions, and local drivers might be distracted by the vibrant atmosphere or searching for parking. Promoting mutual awareness helps bridge the gap between these different groups using the same streets. The “Expect a Pedestrian” initiative serves to remind drivers to stay alert in areas popular with students and tourists, while also encouraging pedestrians, especially those new to the area, to be mindful of local traffic norms. By fostering a community-wide culture of safety and consideration, this initiative can enhance the experience for both residents and visitors, creating a safer and more welcoming environment for everyone in our college town and tourist destination.”

“The Wallkill Valley Land Trust wholeheartedly supports the ‘Expect a Pedestrian’ initiative,” states Executive Director Christie DeBoer. “In a community as diverse and vibrant as ours, fostering mutual awareness and responsibility is paramount. By promoting safety and consideration, we can create a welcoming and secure environment for our community members, students, and visitors.”

We thank our sponsor, Harry Lipstein, owner of Water Street Market in New Paltz, for his generous support of printing the initial sign run!
